Fantasy & Nonsense. James Whitcomb Riley. Illustrated by Berrot H. Hubrecht.

(Provo, UT: Tryst Press, 2001.)
25cm x 18.5cm x 1.8cm

Bound in the French technique in ‘seafoam’ goat, montage sur onglets. Cover design is an incised line with acrylic painted in. Design elements include hand-sewn silk endbands, colored top-edge, custom paste papers for the pastedowns and flyleaves, and leather hinges. Titling on spine, blind. Bound in 2012.

Riley’s poems are delightful, and complemented by the fantastic wood engravings by Hubrecht. My design is made up of parts of the outlines of the illustrations, recognizable bits that I found interesting to the eye. I choose a vibrant and contrasting palette for the cover — seafoam green and bright orange — in deference to the many fun colors in the interior. I wove them into a “line” that stretches across both covers, continuing onto the endsheets, though here the line is static. I choose to title blind, a readable but subtle complement to the horizontal movement across the spine.
